HOWTO: Swap files between iPhones over WiFi using MNPlight ---------------------------------------------------------- Requirements: - at least two iPhones with MNPlight above version 2.12 - a WiFi network allowing transfers between local hosts Step-by-step process in MNPlight: (Note that you can try this process with one iPhone just for testing...) 1) On each iPhone, click on the "Transfers" icon. The "MNPlight::Transfers" page should appear. 2) Use the "New Room" form to create a new room on each iPhone. The name of the room should be a secrete shared by both iPhones. Case matters. 3) Once the room is created on each iPhone, use the link to the room to enter the room. Use the "Update" button until all the iPhones are showed to be in the room. Each iPhone needs to enter the room to be displayed as in the room. You can use the "Reset" button to clear the room if old iPhones are present. 4) On the iPhone with the files to swap, use the "Browse" button to enter the file browser. Use the "Send File" button on the right of a file to offer it to other iPhones, and even for a directory (the complete directory will be sent). You can also navigate in directories using links. The shared file should now appear in the "Beams" section of the room. 5) Other iPhones should use the "Update" button until the shared file is shown under the iPhone sharing the file, in the room. The "Advertise" button can be used to resend the information to all the iPhones, if some missed it. 6) Other iPhones can choose to either browse the content of the package (using the link) or use the "Download" button to download the complete package. In this case, a form will appear to ask for the directory where the package should be saved. The Index of all files is first downloaded, and then all the files in the package. An error appears when a file is not completely downloaded. 7) Use the "Delete" button to remove the the files. Important details: * When you enter a room, your iPhone will stay in the room for 5 minutes, unless it is disconnected from the network. You should use the "Update" button to remain longer in the room. * If your iPhone gets disconnected for a while, it might not see the other iPhones because it believes to still be in the room, and is not anymore (it uses a network technique called multicast, where you have to be registered locally but it cannot detect that it has been unregistered when it was disconnected). One solution is to restart MNPlight. * Once a file has been advertised as shared, other iPhones can still download it until either the iPhone disconnects, or the room is cleared or deleted. Exiting the room is not enough. Consequently, even if your iPhone is not in the room anymore, other iPhones can still download the files if they were in the room with you when you announced the file was shared. * Transfers of files are not secured. Somewhat spying on the WiFi network will be able to download the files. However, other iPhones will only be able to download the files if they knew the name of the room.
